If you are
planning a renovation or demolition of a building constructed or
significantly modified, it may contain asbestos. EPA regulations under National Emission Standards for Hazardous
Air Pollutants (NESHAPS), 40 CFR 61, Part M require you to know
the extent of asbestos in your building prior to the start of
work.
Asbestos-containing building materials such as, flooring mastics, linoleum mastics, and roofing tars can still be used in construction today. Only certain asbestos-containing materials such as, fireproofing have been banned by EPA. Asbestos-containing flooring tile is, and can still be imported from outside the U.S. and used in buildings.
